The American Bar Association (ABA) estimates that less than 20% of the civil legal needs of the poor are being met nationwide. Help. Help Help.<\/p>\n

The need has always exceeded the available resources and continues to grow. In the 17-county area served by LAWM there are over 686,000 individuals who live at or below the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines (FPIG) and qualify for free legal assistance.<\/p>\n

There is one Legal Aid attorney for every 19,600 financially eligible clients in our 17-county area of southwest Michigan.Nearly 4,800 private attorneys in the same geographic area (1 for every 143 eligible clients).\u00a0Help us level the playing field for those in our community who cannot afford an attorney in order to obtain justice.<\/p>\n

To secure justice and protect rights of low-income individuals unable to obtain and pay for legal services in civil matters by the provision of legal representation and counsel.<\/p>\n

Legal Aid of Western Michigan (LAWM) is a nonprofit law firm providing free legal advice and representation to low income individuals in a broad range of areas including consumer cases, family matters, housing problems, government benefits, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n

LAWM is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Our Board is made up of 21 lawyers and representatives of the low income community who are committed to guiding the program in its efforts to provide high-quality legal assistance to those who otherwise would be unable to obtain legal counsel. Our Board also ensures that LAWM is accountable to its clients.<\/span><\/p>\n

Funding for LAWM comes from a wide variety of federal, state and local government sources, foundations and other private sources, along with donations from attorneys and other individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n

LAWM has a dedicated staff of over 30 attorneys located in 5 offices in southwest Michigan. In addition to our staff attorneys, over 100 private attorneys volunteer time to assist LAWM clients every year.<\/span><\/p>\n

We do not handle criminal matters. We only handle civil matters. Our funders, our board of directors and our client community help us set priorities for the types of cases we should handle.
